Undo “Send mails” in Gmail

Did you know you can undo a sent e-mail in Gmail? It’s a lesser known feature, but Google just made it even better than it was before. When it first launched, you were given a 5-second window during which you could hit “undo.”

Now that’s up to 30 seconds, Google Operating System discovered.

The feature is hidden from most users who don’t know where to look, so here’s a quick guide to avoiding social and workplace faux pas with the click of a button. Be aware that the feature is part of Gmail Labs, though. That means it’s still in testing and it might not always work as intended.

Go to Gmail Labs

Since the Undo Send feature is part of Gmail Labs, you’ll have to navigate to the Gmail Labs page to activate it. Load up Gmail and look in the top-right corner of the page. Between your e-mail address and Settings you’ll see the green "Labs icon". Give it a click.

Enable “Undo Send” and Save Your Changes

You’ll be presented with a list of features Google is testing in Gmail. Some are very useful and some are just fun. We’ve gone into more depth on all Gmail Labs has to offer in previous articles, but this time we’re here just for the Undo Send feature.

You’ll usually find it close to the bottom of the list. We’ve included a picture of it above so you know what you’re looking for. Just select Enable then scroll down and save your changes.

Customize Undo Send’s Duration

By default, Gmail gives you a 10-second window of time in which you may undo a sent e-mail. You can change that to five, 20 or 30 seconds by going to Settings (in the top right corner of the main Gmail page, right next to the Labs icon) and finding the Undo Send section inside the “General” tab.

There you can enable or disable Undo Send and change the duration with a drop-down selection box.

Write and Send Your E-mail

Now that Undo Send is enabled, it works each time you send a new e-mail. You don’t have to do anything unusual beforehand to make it possible to use Undo Send with that e-mail.

Click the “Undo” Button After You Send

Now you have either five, 10, 20 or 30 seconds to undo your sent e-mail, depending on what you selected under Settings.

As soon as you hit Send, a subtle line of text will appear above your Inbox saying “Your message has been sent.” It will be accompanied by a few extra options. Among them is “Undo.” Click that within the allotted time and your faux pas will be prevented.

Note that you can hit “Z” on your keyboard, the Gmail shortcut for undo. Just don’t navigate away from or close this page, because once you do, you’ll lose the opportunity to undo your sent message forever.

“Sending Has Been Undone”

You’ll immediately be taken back to the e-mail composition page, and your e-mail will be in draft form, unsent and ready for further editing — or deletion, if writing it was ill-advised to begin with!

Shift+Win+number (1-9): Starts a new instance of the application pinned to the taskbar in that position.
Ctrl+Win+number (1-9): Cycles through open windows for the application pinned to the taskbar is that position.
Alt+Win+number (1-9): Opens the Jump List for the application pinned to the taskbar.
Win+T: Focus and scroll through items on the taskbar.
Win+B: Focuses the System Tray icons

In addition, you can interact with the taskbar using your mouse and a modifier key:

Shift+Click on a taskbar button: Open a program or quickly open another instance of a program.
Ctrl+Shift+Click on a taskbar button: Open a program as an administrator.
Shift+Right-click on a taskbar button: Show the window menu for the program (like XP does).
Shift+Right-click on a grouped taskbar button: Show the window menu for the group.
Ctrl+Click on a grouped taskbar button: Cycle through the windows of the group.

Ctrl+Shift+N: Creates a new folder in Windows Explorer.
Alt+Up: Goes up a folder level in Windows Explorer.

How to Lock a folder and redirect it to Control Panel

We often keep some private materials which others should not see at the home PC. How can we hide it from others praying eyes. Its very simple and effective. We can redirect the folder to "Control Panel" of "My Documents" whenever any one clicks on them.

Follow the procedure :

Lets assume you have a folder in drive D names Personal.
Now rename this folder to "Control Panel.{21EC2020-3AEA-1069-A2DD-08002B30309D}"
Anyone clicking on this will be redirected to control panel instead of your folder. So the files remain invisible to others.

1. Go to Start > RUN, type CMD and press enter.
Go to the drive where your folder is located by typing the command ":" and press enter. Here in this case we will type D: and press enter.
Now type "dir/x" and press enter. The folder will be shown as for example with control panel it shows as contro~1.{21.
Now rename this folder to any name using command "ren " without quote.
In this case we will type "ren control~1 Personal".
The folder is unlocked now.

How to Add Command Prompt To Folder Context Menu in Windows XP

Some times we need to work with some files which is located in a particular folder from command prompt. But it’s too complicated to go into that particular folder with long names including spaces. It adds to the woes if the folder is located within 2-3 sub folders. So it will be very much convenient if we can launch command prompt from the folder which we want to work with.

Vista has this feature. If you hold down the shift key while right clicking on a folder vista gives a option to Open Command Window Here.

But Windows xp does not comes with such option. In this tutorial we will learn how to add vista like command prompt option to folder context menu. So when you right click on a folder you can directly open command prompt without changing the path from dos manually.

Follow these steps :

1. Start regedit from run dialogue box.

2. Go to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell

3. Create a new key by right clicking on shell & select New > Key

4. Name it command

5. Now select command. On the right pane double click the value Default

6. Now on the Value Data field type Open Command Window Here

7. Now select the command key on the left pane again. Right click on it.

8. Select New > Key & give it’s name command.

9. Now select the command sub key. On right pan double click on the value Default & type cmd.exe /k “cd %L”

Now you should see Open Command Window Here whenever you right click on a folder.

Ever since MS office 2007 was launched, there was not much of a file format change resulting a default file format compatibility between all versions of Office (98 / 2000 / XP / 2003).

The default extension for saving a file in MS office (98 / 2k / XP / 2k3) are same,

.doc for office word
.xls for office excel
.ppt for office power point

Since Office 2007 is launched a new file format has been introduced which takes and extra 'x' in the extension. As for example,

.docx for office word (2007 / 2010)
.xlsx for office excel (2007 / 2010)
.pptx for office power point (2007 / 2010)

In Microsoft Office 2007 and 2010, the default save format is the new, above mentioned file extensions.

How to hide stuff in CDs and DVDs

Many a times you might have wished certain stuff on your CDs and DVDs were private and accessible only to you and no one else. While you could achieve this using WinRAR or any other archiving software that can encrypt your data, it doesn't allow for quick access to the data as you need to decrypt and extract the stuff first. While this might not be much of a problem for a small amount of data, you might get into trouble when you’ve got gigabytes of ones and zeroes to hide. Now I know that for all legitimate purposes your stash of hidden data would never really get this extensive, but the keyword here is ‘legit’. What about the skeletons in your closet? (Read: porn) They need to go somewhere too, right? And you need a much larger cache for them. You *could* just take a hike and encrypt those files anyway but since questionable content has a tendency to amass gigabytes of space, you might get into some serious trouble while extracting the stuff; not to mention about the overhead associated with decryption. Your processor wouldn't be so happy about it.

Oh, and a conspicuous 4GB RAR archive that also happens to be password protected does raise a few eyebrows So what do you do? How do you hide all that illicit data you gathered from your sporadic covert operations?Well, there are many solutions. And you can be inventive and create a new one too or just and find some more off the web and add them to this thread. Here’s what I found:1. CD-Lock2. Multi-Session Hiding3. Modified Disc Image (Hex Edit)(This list is by no means exhaustive and there might be many more innovative ways to hide stuff in optical media. If you catch any, bump this thread with your finds)CD-Lock:This is a fairly easy to use software tool that encrypts your stuff and then decrypts them ‘on-the-fly’ and with speed you won’t believe... literally. This program installs a system level driver and that’s probably what does the trick. I’m not sure whether it’s actually secure though, but for everyday purposes, CD-Lock might just cut it. When I tested it way back (when I was with a P4 and WinXP), it seemed a lot buggy. They’ve probably fixed the bugs by now, but you can never tell. Try it out for yourself and see what you getURL: http://www.cd-lock.com/Multi-Session Hiding:Now this is something I stumbled upon totally by accident. I made a multi-session disc and burnt some data into it. Then one day I went to a cyber cafe, downloaded lots of hacking tools, books, MHT webpages, etc. and other variegated content. I asked the guy who ran the cafe to burn the stuff into the DVD for me (the one I made earlier) and when he was done, I couldn't find the stuff I burnt earlier. They had vanished into thin air (or thin plastic) without leaving a trace. I did some online research and found out that sometimes only the last session that’s burnt onto a disc would show up. This does not mean that the earlier sessions are lost. You can still access them and extract data by using specialized software like IsoBuster or CD/DVD InspectorI haven’t tried achieving this on purpose, but I’m sure it can be done (see IsoBuster screenshots)

Modified Disc Image (Hex Edit):This is a technique I found about at a forum somewhere on the internet and I tried it out.Things you need:
PowerISO or any ISO burning/creating software (IMGBurn might work too)
A hex editor capable of handling very large file (I used HxD and Tiny Hexer)
WinRAR (optional)In this example, I’ll show you how to hide files in a CD. The same method applies for hiding stuff in DVDs. First of all, you need to decide on a nice and small dummy file to write to the disc. This file will be visible to anyone who reads the disc. The dummy should be small if you want more room for your hidden (or questionable) content.Calculate the size of the dummy file in this way:Questionable Content + Dummy = 700MB (for CDs)Questionable Content + Dummy = 4.7GB /8GB (for DVDs)We need to do this to make sure there’s no free space left on the disk so that it looks as if nothing’s burnt to it e.g. If we burn a 40MB dummy and 200MB hidden stuff, then by looking at the disc you can make out whether something fishy is going on. But if it was fully burnt, you probably won’t see the difference (This is only to ward off nosy friends and relatives. A motivated geek will get if your hidden data if he is suspicious)Ok, now start PowerISO (or any other image creation program) and add the dummy file. Create an ISO image of the disc and then open it in HxD (Tiny Hexer is great but doesn’t handle large files )Now move to the end of the image in the hex edit. Click on the right side of the hex dump where you see all the garbage stuff like numbers, symbols and text. The cursor should be at the end of the file. Now create a marker here so you know this is where your hidden cache starts. Create a marker by typing something in here that you can relate to like [START] or {HIDDEN STUFF START}, etc.Now load the file you want to hide in the hex editor and copy everything from it. Note that you need to copy the ASCII stuff in the right and not the actual HEX data (in layman terms, just copy all the garbage on the right and *not* the numbers and capital letters on the left)Switch back to the hex dump of the ISO image and paste all the stuff there (append it to the file)Now you may insert a file termination marker so you know here’s where your file ends. Enter a marker like [END] or {END OF FILE} etc.You can repeat the above process for any number of files you want to hide, but make sure the size of the image doesn’t exceed the size of the optical media.Oh, and by the way, you might want to add a filename and filetype marker with the start and end tags too as you probably won’t remember them just by looking at its hex dump ;PNow that you’ve appended all your dirty stuff to the ISO image, you can go right ahead and burn it. After you’re done, put the disc back into the tray and check it out. Windows will show the space occupied by the dummy file and your hidden stash will not be seen. Even the disc properties will show no free space left on the disc. Cool, eh? How to extract the stuff back you ask?Just create an image of this disc and throw it into HxD. Look for your markers (search for text-strings)And extract (copy) everything between the [START] and [END] marker. Create a blank file (in HxD) and paste the copied stuff in there and save it with the correct file extension.Tada! You’re done! Happy hiding! Useful Tips:1. When you’re looking for a dummy file with the right filesize, you might not get one that fits the bill. You can try using Windows search for it or use a much better program like Locate for this purpose. Just do a filesize search.2. In Tiny Hexer, you can create macros which can probably help in automating the whole process of extraction from the disc image. If anybody succeeds in doing that then please share your creation.3. Keep in mind that we’re only hiding stuff here, not protecting them so you might want to encrypt your files with WinRAR (I mentioned it in the beginning, didn’t I?) for security purposes but that defeats the whole purpose in the first place, doesn’t it?4. Another useful tip would be to create a virtual encrypted volume using TrueCrypt and then burn it to the disk. It certainly doesn't hide anything but your data is encrypted and you can mount it right from the disc (I think) and use it just like an ordinary CD or DVD. And what's more? If you are forced by someone to reveal the password to the volume, you can even define a fake password that unlocks a hidden volume containing garbage data inside it so the attacker is thrown off-course (Can someone do a nice tutorial on this please?)5. Reset / Recover Your Forgotten Windows Administrator Password

What will you do if you or any friend of you forgot the windows administrator password. How would you recover or reset it? There are a few tricks you can try ...

First Method:

Windows always created an "Administrator" account by default and assigns no password to it. So if you have forget your user account password then try this:

Start system and when you see Windows Welcome screen / Login screen, press 'ctrl'+'alt'+'del' keys twice and it’ll show Classic Login box. Now type “Administrator” (without quotes) in Username and leave Password field blank. Now press Enter and you should be able to log in Windows.

Now you can reset your account password from “Control Panel -> User Accounts“.

Same thing can be done using Safe Mode. In Safe Mode Windows will show this in-built Administrator account in Login screen.

Second Method:

Windows XP and further versions also provide another method to recover forgotten password by using “Reset Disk“. If you created a Password Reset Disk in past, you can use that disk to reset the password. To know more about it, please visit following links:

Third Method:

If the above mentioned tricks doesnt work, then try following trick which is actually a loophole in Windows XP Setup and a big security hole:

A. Boot using Windows XP Setup CD and follow the instruction like Accepting EULA, etc.

B. When it asks to repair your existing Windows installation, accept it and press “R” to run the repair.

C. Setup will start repairing your Windows and will start copying files, etc.

D. After a few minutes setup will restart your system and when it restarts don’t press any key when it shows “Press any key to continue…” otherwise Setup will start from the beginning. Don’t press any key and setup will resume where it left.

E. Now it’ll start doing other tasks and will show a small progressbar with a few details in left side.

F. Look carefully at the details and when it shows “Installing devices“, press +F10 keys in your keyboard.

G. It’ll open a Command Prompt window. Now type nusrmgr.cpl and press .

H. It’ll open the same “User Accounts” window which you see in Control Panel.

I. Now you can remove or reset any account password without any problem.

J. Let the windows installation complete the repair process. It will not delete any of your data.

K. It works in FAT file system.

You can use the ISO to burn a boot CD. Follow these instructions:

2. Burn to a CD using a CD burning tool such as Nero or Roxio or MagicISO
3. Insert CD into drive and reboot.
4. You may have to select an option in the BIOS to get the computer to boot from the CD.

Booting up and clearing a password takes a minute or two works like a charm.

Use your USB Pen Drive as RAM in Windows Vista

Windows Vista provides us with a feature called ReadyBoost. This feature enables us to make use of our pendrive as RAM, so that we can increase the performance of our PC.

This is how we can use ReadyBoost:
1. Plug in your PenDrive.
2. Open Computer
3. Right-click on the removable storage device and select Properties.
4. Click on the ReadyBoost tab.
5. Select "Use This Device" and "set the amount of space u want to use as RAM"

We all know about using USB flash drive as RAM on Windows Vista. If somebody doesn't knows wait for my next post.

It would be great for us if we can use the same feature available on Windows XP? That would be a great alternative for most of the xp users who can not upgrade their old systems and running new softwares is not possible as they are equipped with a low RAM. At times we need to delete IE history, cookies, saved passwords etc. Its a lengthy process if we do it from desktop internet explorer icon or IE tools menu. What if we can clear everything or a selected one or two from command prompt or using batch file.

Here are the commands that relates to the different buttons. You can use these command directly from command prompt, run box or can use in combination in a batch file.

Add Disk Cleanup to the Right-Click Menu for a Drive

Over a period of time after using our PC it gathers a lot of junk file of no use in various temp folders. When we want to clean these files we have to go through Start Menu to Disk Clean up or opening up Drive Properties Window. Both are lengthy process. How it would be if we can get it on the Right Click Menu for a drive. A simple registry hack will do the job for you. Backup your registry before making any change.

Click start -> run and type Regedit, press enter. Navigate to the following registry key.

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Drive\shell

Create a new key called "diskcleanup" and set the default value to "Disk Cleanup". Then create another key under it called "command" and set the value to the following.

cleanmgr.exe /d %1

Close registry editor and restart the PC. Now right click on any drive you should see the option.

Add Copy To / Move To to the Windows Explorer Right Click Menu

We often need to copy / move files between various locations. It would be helpful for us if we can just right click on the file and select Copy to or Move to. We can do that work with a little Ragistry Hacking. Before making any changes to the Windows Registry you must take a backup.

Make Copy To

Make Move To

Navigate to the following key
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\AllFilesystemObjects\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers
Once you are at that key, right click and choose the New Key option:
Now you will double-click on the (Default) value and enter the following:

Close Registry Editor. Restart the PC and you are done.
Now when you right click on a file or folder, you should see the Copy To / Move To options on the right click shortcut menu.

Add "My Computer" to Your Vista / XP Taskbar

At times we want to have the quickest access to the folders located in different drives or directly to a drive. We can do that by putting it onto the taskbar. We can even put My Computer onto the taskbar

To add a Folder or My Computer to the taskbar, just right-click on the taskbar and choose the Toolbars menu, and then click on New Toolbar.

Now find the folder that you want, in this case we will select the My Computer icon and then click on OK./Select.

Now you can see the My Computer folder right there on the taskbar. If you click the little arrows it will pop up and let you browse through all your drives.

You can add the Desktop to the toolbar as well.

Formating USB Pen / Flash Drive with NTFS : A Guide

By default windows allows to format pen drive with fat or fat32 file system which can not store files larger than 4 GB. But nowadays we have larger USB drives as well as transfer files more than 4GB such as DVD or dual layer DVD image. NTFS does not have such issues, more reliable and can store files larger than 4 GB.

Follow the procedure stated below to format your pen drive with NTFS. Make sure you take backup of all your files before proceeding.

Plug in your pen drive.
Right click on My Computer.

Click on Properties > Hardware > Device Manager.

Expand Disk Drives & Click on your Pen Drive Name.

Now Right click on your pen drive name & select Properties.

Go to Polocies Tab & Select Optimize for Performance.

Click OK. Close device Manager.

Now open My Computer & Select Your USB / Pen Drive. Right click on it & select Format. Click on File system box. You see the NTFS option.
Now select NTFS & fromat your pen drive.

You can also convert your pen drive’s fat file system to ntfs as you use to convert fat partion to nfts.
Open command prompt and type the following command and press Enter Key.
convert x: /fs:ntfs
x is the drive letter of your USB Drive

Recover / Reset Windows XP Administrator Password

Somtimes we forget our windows password. We don't have any way other than to install everything fresh, or do we have a few methods to recover or reset. Yes we do, follow the three process explained below ...

Process 1:
Whenever we install Windows, it automatically creates an account “Administrator” by default and sets its password to blank. So Start your system and press ctrl+alt+del keys together twice when you see Windows Welcome screen or Login screen, and it’ll show Classic Login box. Once the Logon box is displayed type Administrator in Username and leaving the Password field blank press Enter. You should be able to log in to Windows.
Now reset your account password from Start -> Control Panel -> User Accounts.

Process 2 :
Windows XP and next versions also allow another process to recover/reset forgotten password by using “Reset Disk“. always create a Password Reset Disk while installing windows or later in a convenient time. You can use that disk to reset the password. Please visit following links to know more ...

If the two process mentioned above doesnot work the try the next process. It is a bit lengthy process but wothwhile if you can recover/reset your password without a complete fresh install.

Process 3:
If the above mentioned tricks doesnt work, then try following trick which is actually a loophole in Windows XP Setup and a big security hole:
1. Boot using Windows XP Setup CD and continue.
2. Accept and press “R” to run the repair when it asks to repair your existing Windows installation,
3. Setup will start repairing your Windows and will start copying files, etc. After a few minutes setup will restart your system.
4. Now it will start doing other tasks and will show a small progressbar with a few details in left side.
5. When it shows “Installing devices“, press Shift+F10 keys together in your keyboard.
6. It will open a Command Prompt window. Now type nusrmgr.cpl and press Enter.
7. It will open the same “User Accounts” window which you see in Control Panel. You can reset your password now.

Seagate releases 1.5 TB Hard Disk Drive

The 7200.4, as the name suggests, targets the high-performance end of the magnetic drive market, and ships with 16MB of cache. As for the 7200.11, it'll slot in at the top of that product family. The main difference between the new 1.5TB drive and the 1TB ST31000340AS already available is their platter density. Both disks are four-platter designs, but the 1TB drive uses four 250GB platters, while the new 1.5TB is apparently using four 375GB platters. 375GB seems a bit odd for a platter size, Samsung's new 1TB Speedpoint F1 drives now use three 333GB platters instead of the original 4x250GB configuration the drive first shipped with. How to delete Internet Explorer browsing history ...

We often surf some of the unmentionable sites in our office computers or while using a friends / relatives computer which we do not want to let them know. In that situation we want to remove the History stored on the computer but do not know how to do that. The solution is elaborated below for Internet Explorer 7.
Step 1 : Click on the Tools menu or Tools Button on the toolbar or ALT+O and then click on Internet Options to invoke internet options dialogue box.

Step 2 : Now on the dialogue box click on Delete under Browsing History.

Step 3 : Now click on Delete History located under History section.

Step 4 : Now another dialogue box comes up for confirmation on which click on Yes to confirm.

You are done with your job. The history which appears on the address bar drop down list is deleted. You can do a lot more things like deleting Temporary internet files, cookies, saved passwords and form data using the same process.

Manual steps to re-create the Show Desktop icon on the Quick Launch toolbar

Sometimes by mistake we delete the Show Desktop icon from the Quick Launch Toolbar. The Show Desktop icon is not an ordinary program shortcut. If the icon is deleted, the procedure for re-creating the icon is not obvious. To manually re-create the Show Desktop icon, follow these steps:

1. In Notepad, type the following text on individual lines:
[Shell]

Command=2

IconFile=explorer.exe,3

[Taskbar]

Command=ToggleDesktop
2. Save the file giving filename as Show Desktop.scf.

Note: Notepad automatically takes .txt as extension to the file name. write as "Show Desktop.scf" with the quotes to prevent notepad taking .txt as extension.
Now move the shortcut to the correct folder in the user profile to appear in the Quick Launch toolbar. To manually do this, use one of the following methods.

Method 1
1. Use the mouse to drag the Show Desktop.scf icon to the Quick Launch toolbar or another location where you want the shortcut to appear.
2. Click Move Here.

Method 2
1. Use Windows Explorer to locate the following folders:
Microsoft Windows 95/98 Windows\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch

How To Make A Shutdown Timer !

Do you know that you can make your PC shutdown at a time u wish to? We all may have used software to shutdown / restart our PC at times. But we can do this without using any software. Three methods are explained below with which we can automate shutdown our PC.

METHOD 1
Step 1:
Right click on your desktop and choose "New=>shortcuts".
Step 2:
In the box that says "Type the location of the shortcut",type in "shutdown -s -t 3600" without the quotation marks and click next.
Note: 3600 are the amount of seconds before your computer shuts down. So , 60secs*60mins=3600secs.
Step 3:
Make up a name for the shortcut and you're done.You can change the icon by right clicking=>properities=>change icon=>browse.
To abort:
To make an abort key to stop the shutdown timer just create another shortcut and makethe "location of the shortcut" to " shutdown -a" without the quotes.

METHOD 2
Here is another trick to shutdown at a specific time, for example you wish to shutdown at 11:35am. Type this instart=>Run

Taking proper care of a Pen/USB Drive

well guys now a days pen drives are really cheap and have become most sought after ways of data transfer. below are some points to just have a look at

1. life
only thing(apart from normal wear and tear) the affects life of a usb drive is write cycles.
u can read data from a drive any no of times u want but writing a data to it will decrease its life by a bit.writing includes deleting/defragmenting etc.thus unless sufficient space is not left in ur drive for ur new file , DONOT delete old data from it , just insert more new data.

2 defragment
unlike normal hard disks wid moving spidles , pen drives do not have slow and fast zones.data kept anywhere will be read at same speed in a pen drive.thus NEVER defrag ur pen drive as it introduces one more write cycle and reduce life of ur pen drive (by just a little bit).
also usb drives don't have any head that needs to move its position (thus wasting time to read a fragmented file on an a hard drive drive)
so no need whatsoever to defrag ur usb(or any other solid state drives)
3. safely remove ur external drive
well speed of hd is much faster than pen drivethus when u transfer data to ur pen drive , to speed things up , some of the data may be "cached" by ur os.
thus when the dialogue box showing file transfer to pen drive has vanished , the data may not have been completely written to pen drive.that is why whenever u copy something to ur pen drive u must always make sure that u "safely remove the hardware" just to be sure that all data has been transferred.
when u are reading from ur pen drive , no such thing occurs , thus the moment the transfer dialog is complete , u can simply take out ur pen drive without any fear of data corruption.
thus always "safely remove hardware" when u copy something to ur pen drive , else it is not necessary
4. file systems
default is fat 32some guys prefer ntfs , linux geeks may try out ext3.
well these journaled file systems carry no real benefit in terms of data security.but they have a lot of overhead in terms of journaling , keeping extra record bout files etc.
this again introduces useless write cycles which again is bad for life for ur pen drive
5. viruses
these can be avoided bya-> using linuxb-> using hips(comodo defence+)
else on windows , always disable autorun of removable drives from "tweakui"also keep anti virus updated .
well if u must , transfer data from a pc u know is already "infected"(college pc/net cafe's) then
1. shut down "infected" pc2. boot into ubuntu installer's live disk3. now attach ur pen drive and transfer data happily!!
or else if u can , make urself a bootable ubuntu pen drive.simply boot into it and do what u want fearlessly

Guide To Copy DVD Movies

Copying Movies from DVD has always been a lick but we keep facing different kinds of problem. There are various software's like DVD Shrink, DVD Decrypter etc with which we can actually copy our DVD's to our HDD even if there is a copy protection lock. There are software's like AnyDVD which are specifically developed just to break the copy protection in DVD's.
But even then we do face problems some times in copying DVD as we get errors like "Un-recovered Read Error" or "Data cannot be read" etc. This is because companies making DVD movies insert many Dummy Sectors in their DVD's which do not cause any problem while watching the movie but creates a hell lot of problem while copying them. As these areas are blank, you don't miss any part of the movie when you just want to watch the them.
After giving a lot of time to this and trying a huge lot of software's, I finally found a combination of 4 software's with which one can copy EACH & EVERY DVD-MOVIE to their HDD, WITHOUT FAIL... Now, don't panic seeing that you will have to use four software's... They all work as a team and you don't have to worry to launch each one individually.
I know it pains when you have to pay for even one software from your pocket and here we are talking about 4 software's. Don't worry, the best part of this is that all these four software's are FREEWARE, so you wont have to shed a single paise from your pocket.
Before starting, its my duty to tell you that backing up your DVD Movies for storage is legal but distribution of a copied DVD is illegal and I am not responsible for any such thing.
Software's Needed :
1. DVD Decrypter2. DVD Shrink3. FixVTS4. RipIt4Me
Procedure :
1. Install DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter. The rest two software's do not need an installation as you can work with them directly. Mind you that you will need all the four software's to successfully copy DVD's.
2. Insert the DVD that you want to copy to you HDD (needless to mention that you should have optimum space in your HDD to accommodate your movies). Start DVD Shrink and let it analyze your DVD to check if there are any blank cells on the DVD which it cant read. If it finds any, it will give you an error saying that "Data error (cyclic redundancycheck)" and if it doesn't find any, find yourself to be very lucky as you wont have to use any other software. Simply copy the movie with DVD Shrink. Incase if you are not aware how to work with DVD- Shrink, please visit http://www.mrbass.org/dvdshrink/ for a detailed guide on the same.
3. Incase if you are unlucky and face a data error, Start RipIt4Me and click on Wizard Mode...
4. Select your DVD Drive in which you have placed the Movie disk and then select the target where you want to copy the movie. Lastly, press "Next"
5. Click on "Create PSL"
6. Check the "Rip Just The Movie" and then click on "Rip DVD"
7. As soon as you press "Rip DVD", DVD Decrypter automatically starts. Select all the files shown in the list if you want to copy the whole disk. Incase if you have a multi movie DVD and you don't want to copy the whole disk but a particular movie, select "VIDEO_TS.IFO", "VIDEO_TS.VOB", "VIDEO_TS.BUP" followed by selecting all "IFO" files. Now select the "vob" and "bup" files of the movie that you want to copy (To select multiple files, keep "Ctrl" pressed while selecting those files). Lastly press the "Decrypt" button to start the copying/decrypting process...
Note: Although we are using DVD Decrypter to copy the movie, it cannot detect the dummy sectors of its own. Here comes the role of RipIt4Me. So incase if you are thinking of using DVD Decrypter directly without RipIt4Me, be sure that you will get a Data Read Error.
8. As you can see in the log below, DVD Decryptor along with RipIt4Me has found many Dummy Sectors where other software's used to fail.
9. After the extraction process is complete, press "Do It" to remove the protected cells...
10. Pressing "Do It" will remove the protected cells and open the next dialog for you. Here all you have to do is open try to open the extracted movie through DVD Shrink by pressing the button "Open With DVD Shrink". As soon as you press this button, the analysis process in DVD Shrink starts automatically. If the analysis process is successful, you are through. Follow the DVD Shrink guide to copy or shrink the movie to some other location. Incase if the analysis fails again, press the "Process With FixVTS" button which will process your movie again and remove all the unwanted dummy sectors that the movie contains. After this, press "Open With DVD Shrink" again and be sure that the analysis process will be successful this time.
Note: Do not press "Done" till the time you have copied the movie with DVD Shrink to some other location. Doing so will again make the movie unreadable as the dummy sectors those were marked by this software will be unmarked again.

A Guide To Cleaning Ur PC Inside-Out

Cleaning ur PC is essential today. Got ur new hardware and Windows? Happy with the power and features? LLet a month past and ull start seeing all the dust it got on it.So how do u get rid of it? This thread is aimed at healthily cleaning ur PC while getting it back in one piece.
When and when u shud clean? Well it maybe once in a month or two. It could be boring and IT WILL TAKE TIME but its essential.
Why Do It? Well dust tends o kill the ellegence of ur PC and more if it stays stationary, it may cause malfunctioning in fans and other components.
What things to use for the job? The things i tend to use is a cloth(dry and smooth) and a blower(hot or cold air dont matter.) And u need to have a brush (tooth or painting one) handy for small places. And as usuall all the stuff to open ur cabinet.
How to do it? Well the main part. Gentally start by unplugging ur wires(remeber them i u still havent to as to where to plug them!)Open the cabinet and be sure to place on it on sturdy table-top or something. Use ur wares or directly open if u have thumb screws. Gently clean the panels inside and out with the cloth and blow air afterwards. Use the brush for small places. keep the panels in a clean place so all ur work dosent go in vain. Well now moving inside, first clean the base of the inside with the cloth and use brushes again for small places between connectors and stuuf. Clean each fin of each fan with the brush in one hand while using the other to hold the fan steady. did it? Now moving to components. Take the HDD first. Its minimal effort to clean it as its a considerably large component. Use the cloth and brush as for now.Than take the optical drives. Now it needs care as u MAY damage it. Only use gentle brush strokes and be sure to get each crevass(hehe). Moving to ur GPU(if u have a dedicated. Its farely easy, dont use the cloth as to ensure safety. use long vertical strokes on the PCB and be sure to clean between each heatsink stick. Use the fan method on the GPU's fan. CPU is not as easy to clean as they have a big fan. Dont get frustated. Call another person if u like. Dont use the blower as that will just move the fan(actually,try it as its fun to see) use the cloth on the non-occupied parts of the mobo. Be careful while cleaning the RAM. its delicate. U need to plug it out. refer the manual of ur mobo to learn how to unplug it. Just use brush strokes and cloth on the heat-sink. Than blow it with the blower and plug it again. Give each compnent some blowing using the blower. Fit the case as it was and keep it there. We'll clean the wires. Its common sense. Use the brush(Its the best tool aint it?) to do it. U may use cloth for big connectors. No need to use the blower. Keep them aside and YES BE SURE TO CLEAN THAT PART OF THE DESK. Moving on to the monitor. If u have a LCD than its hassale free. Just use the cloth and give it a finishing touch with the blower. If its a CRT than duh! Work again Use the cloth to wipe the screen. Go gentelly all over the body with strokes from the cloth. Use the brush for areas near the stand as they tend to have samll places which are a hot-spot for dust(This point applies to LCDs too). Speakers are fairly easy. Woofers are mainly flat and the sattelites dont have much small places. The cloth will take care of it. Ah! the good old keyboard is a pain. U will have to use the brush to clean the space around each key. YES ALL 4 SIDES OF EACH KEY. but that is if u want a clean keyboard, otherwise just use the cloth and blower. Mouse is easy.
So now? Now? Now enjoy healthy computing. Not only it will give ur system more life, but will also save u from disease.

The windows has a pre-fetch cache. It helps windows to load application faster by Pre-Fetching the application which is stored in the pre-fetch cache. we can speed up application loading by changing the default value of the followinf key.
Navigate to the following key :-

STEP 3: Making Straight Cable…

Requirements: Two RJ45 Connectors, Crimping tool & CAT 5 cable of desiredlength(less than 250 meters).

There are two standards adopted for Cabling EIA/TIA 568A & EIA/TIA 568B.
When you use single standard (either EIA/TIA 568A or EIA/TIA 568B) on both the end of cable then the resulting cable is STRAIGHT CABLE.
On the other hand if you use different cabling standard on the ends of cable then the resulting cable is CROSS CABLE
I’ll use EIA/TIA 568B standard for creating cross and straight cable
The figure below very well define the EIA/TIA 568B standard…

1. Remove the covering of CAT 5 cable.2. Straighten the eight wires of the cable.3. Using Crimping tool’s cutter cut the end of wires so that they are of same length4. Arrange the wire in order 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 & 8 respectively as I have mention or as shown in the diagram.5. Insert the arranged cable in the RJ45 connector with clip pointing down exactly as shown in the figure.6. In crimping tool insert the head of RJ45 connector and crimp (press) it hardly.7. Follow same step with same color order for the other end of cable too.8. The wire you made by following these steps is a STRAIGHT cable.
STEP 4: Making CROSS Cable…
Of the Eight wires in Cat 5 not all are used for data transfer when using 100Mbps Ethernet card. Only 2 pairs of cable are used i.e. 2 wire for transmitting signal and two wires for receiving signal.

So now you can guess why we have to make CROSS CABLE for connecting same kind of devices. Because if use same color coding on both the side than transmitter of one m/c will send data to transmitter of another and data packets will lost, so we have to change wiring code so that transmitter of one connects to reciver of other and vice-versa.Reference diagram:

Here are the Steps:Steps 1 to 6 are same as for STRAIGHT through cables7. Only difference is in color coding of other side of wire.8. Say You have one laptop that needs to be connected both of your home & office network. But changing the the settings manually every time is a hassle. To get rid of this I am presenting you with this tutorial. Windows xp & 2000 ( probably vista also ) has a nifty command line utility that makes switching between network a cake-walk.
Create a folder on your laptop - say : c:\netsettings
While you're on your home network, open the command prompt window and type in the following command :

Command: netsh -c interface dump > c:\netsettings\home.txt

This will store a copy of your home network settings on the above locationaka c:\netsettings\home.txt
Now before turning off the the laptop change the following things as per youroffice network config :
1. workgroup or domain name,2. TCP/IP Settings of your NIC - such as manual or automatic ip settings.3. Gateway & DNS server settings
in one word do all the necessary settings you usually do to connect to your office network.
Now turn off your laptop & go to your workplace or office . Don't be late
After you've successfully log on to your office network save the network settings using this command :

Open My Computer
Double-click the drive where Windows is installed (usually drive (C, unless you have more than one drive on your computer).
If the contents of the drive are hidden, under System Tasks, click Show the contents of this drive.
Double-click the Documents and Settings folder.
Double-click your user folder.
Right-click any folder in your user profile, and then click Properties.
On the Sharing tab, select the Make this folder private so that only I have access to it check box.

Note

To open My Computer, click Start, and then click My Computer.
This option is only available for folders included in your user profile. Folders in your user profile include My Documents and its subfolders, Desktop, Start Menu, Cookies, and Favorites. If you do not make these folders private, they are available to everyone who uses your computer.

Indexing services is a small little program that uses large amounts of RAM and can often make a computer endlessly loud and noisy. This system process indexes and updates lists of all the files that are on your computer. It does this so that when you do a search for something on your computer, it will search faster by scanning the index lists. If you don't search your computer often, or even if you do search often, this system service is completley unnessesary.

Uncheck the Indexing services

Using Notepad as a Log Book, Diary etc !!

Open a blank Notepad file and follow the process below :

At the first line of the file Write .LOG and press enter.
Now Save the file and close it.
Double-click the file to open it and notice that Notepad appends the current date and time to the end of the file and places the cursor on the line after.

Lots of web sites have disabled the right click function of the mouse button. This is done so that the pictures, contents are not copied. Unfortunately, it disables ALL right-click functionality: copy, paste, open in new window.

It's easy to change, assuming your using IE 6. Just follow the steps mentioned below.

Click "Tools"->"Internet Options"
Click the "Security" tab
Click "Custom Level"
Scroll down to the "Scripting" section
Set "Active Scripting" to "disable"
Click "Ok" a couple of times.

You'll probably want to turn this back to "enable" when your done... 'cause generally the javascript enhances a website.

Invisible Folder !!

We often need an invisible folder to hide our inportant files. We can use Windows built-in hide files / folders but anyone can find those hidden files / folders. We can create an invisible folder that we can put on our desktop or within another folder. You can't see it but if you know where it is you can double-click it and view its contents. Follows the steps here and u got an invisible folder only u know exists.

Create a folder anywhere you want it to be.
Turn num lock on, select the name, and hold Alt and press 0160, then release Alt. This will make a character that looks like a space, but it isn't.
Now right click the folder you just made and go to properties. Then go to the Customize tab. Then press the Change Icon button. Scroll through the icons until you find one that has no image.
Click OK and Voila !! You have an invisible folder!

Now you can use it like a hidden treasure box. Only you know that there is a hidden folder. Select all files and you see a little blue rectangle showing presence of your hidden folder.

Your personal computer is a combination of digital data and hardware machinery. To keep your system running smoothly, one needs to perform some regular maintenance jobs. We recommend to do the following tasks regularly for a crash free smooth running of the system.

Check your hard disk drive for file system and media errors.
Defrag your hard disk drive to optimize file storage & access.
You should always have enough space on your hard disk drive. Delete old and unnecessary files that you no longer need.
Taking regular backups of data and system files is necessary.

Checking Disks for Errors

Errors in hard disk and in the file system can cause a variety of Windows problems, ranging from an inability to open or save files to blue-screen errors and widespread data corruption. Though Microsoft Windows XP is capable of recovering automatically from many disk errors, it works specially on drives formatted with NTFS.

To perform a thorough inspection for errors, you can manually run the Windows XP Check Disk utility, Chkdsk.exe. Two versions of this utility are available—a graphical version that performs basic disk-checking functions, and a command-line version that provides a much more extensive set of customization options.

To check for errors on a local disk, follow these steps:
1. Open My Computer, right-click the icon belonging to the drive you want to check, and then choose Properties from the shortcut menu.
2. On the Tools tab, click the Check Now button.
3. In the Check Disk dialog box, select from the following options.

■ Automatically Fix File System Errors Select this option if you want Windows to automatically repair any file system errors. If this option is not selected, Check Disk reports any errors it finds but does not change them. This option is the equivalent of running the Chkdsk command with the /F switch, as described later in this section.
■ Scan For And Attempt Recovery Of Bad Sectors Select this option to perform an exhaustive check of the entire disk, locate bad sectors, and recover readable information stored in defective locations. Note that selecting this option automatically repairs file system errors as well, even if the previous option is cleared. This option is the equivalent of running the Chkdsk command with the /R switch. If you simply want to see a report of file system errors without making any changes to disk structures, leave both boxes unchecked.

4 Click Start to begin the disk-checking process. The green progress bar provides feedback as the error-checking tool goes through several phases. If you select the Automatically Fix File System Errors option on a drive that currently has open files, Windows is unable to run the utility immediately. In that case, you see the message.

Click Yes to schedule the disk check to run the next time you start your computer. The disk check occurs during the character-mode startup phase of Windows; during this period your computer is not available for you to perform any other tasks. When your computer starts, Windows notifies you that it’s about to perform a scheduled disk check; by default, you have 10 seconds to cancel the operation and boot normally instead.

After Check Disk completes its operation, it reports its results. If the disk check turns up no errors, you see a Disk Check Complete dialog box. If Check Disk uncovers any errors, it writes a message to the Event log and displays a dialog box listing the errors it found and the repairs it made.

The command-line version of Check Disk gives you considerably more options. It also allows you to schedule disk-checking operations using the Scheduled Tasks folder. To run this command in its simplest form, log on using an account in the Administrators group, open a Command Prompt window (by typing cmd in the Run box, for instance), and then type chkdsk at the prompt. This command runs Chkdsk in read-only mode, displaying the status of the current drive but not making any changes. If you add a drive letter after the command (chkdsk d:, for instance), the report applies to that drive.

You can use any combination of the following switches at the end of the command line to modify its operation:

● /F Instructs Chkdsk to fix any errors it detects. This is the most commonly used switch. The disk must be locked. If Chkdsk cannot lock the drive (as is always the case with the system drive), it offers either to check the drive the next time you restart the computer or to dismount the volume you want to check before proceeding. Dismounting is a drastic step; it invalidates all current file handles on the affected volume and can result in loss of data. You should decline the offer. When you do, Chkdsk will make you a second offer—to check the disk the next time you restart your system. You should accept this option.
● /V On FAT32 volumes, /V displays verbose output, listing the name of every file in every directory as the disk check proceeds. On NTFS volumes, this switch displays cleanup messages (if any).
● /R Identifies bad sectors and recovers information from those sectors if possible. The disk must be locked. Be aware that this is a time-consuming and uninterruptible process.

The following switches are valid only on NTFS volumes:
● /I Performs a simpler check of index entries (stage 2 in the Chkdsk process), reducing the amount of time required.
● /C Skips the checking of cycles within the folder structure, reducing the amount of time required.
● /X Forces the volume to dismount, if necessary, and invalidates all open file handles. This option is intended for server administrators. Because of the potential for data loss, it should be avoided in normal use with Windows XP Professional or Home Edition.
● /L[:size] Changes the size of the file that logs NTFS transactions. If you omit the size parameter, this switch displays the current size. This option is intended for server administrators. Because of the potential for data loss, it also should be avoided in normal use with Windows XP Professional or Home Edition.

Defragmenting Disks for Better Performance

On a relatively new system with a speedy processor and plenty of physical memory, hard disk performance is the single biggest bottleneck in everyday operation. Even on a zippy hard disk, it takes time to load large data files into memory so you can work with them. The problem is especially noticeable with databases, video clips, and CD images, which can easily consume hundreds of megabytes. On a 10-GB NTFS drive, the cluster size is 4 KB. On a FAT32 drive of the same size, clusters are 8 KB. Thus, when you save a 20-MB movie clip on a drive that size, Windows divides the file into approximately 2,560 pieces (NTFS) or 1,280 pieces (FAT32). When you save this file for the first time on a freshly formatted hard disk, Windows writes it in contiguous clusters. Because all the clusters that hold individual pieces of the file are physically adjacent to one another, the mechanical components of the hard disk can work very efficiently, scooping up data in one smooth operation. As a bonus, the Windows disk cache is able to anticipate the need for data and fetch nearby clusters that are likely to contain other parts of the file, which can then be retrieved from the fast cache rather than from the relatively slow disk. Unfortunately, hard disks don’t stay neatly organized for long. When you add data to an existing file, the file system has to allocate more clusters for storage, typically in a different physical location on the disk. As you delete files, you create gaps in the once-tidy arrangement of contiguously stored files. As you save new files, especially large ones, the file system uses all these bits of free space, scattering the new files over the hard disk in many noncontiguous pieces. The resulting inefficiency in storage is called fragmentation; each time you open or save a file on a badly fragmented disk, disk performance suffers, sometimes dramatically, because the disk heads have to spend extra time moving from cluster to cluster before they can begin reading or writing data.

Using Disk Defragmenter

The Disk Defragmenter utility improves performance by physically rearranging files so that they’re stored in contiguous clusters. In addition to consolidating files and folders, the utility also consolidates free space, making it less likely that new files will be fragmented when you save them. Windows XP includes a graphical utility that works as a snap-in with Microsoft Management Console. A command-line version of this utility (new in Windows XP) allows you to schedule defragmentation so that it occurs automatically, at regular intervals. For details about setting up a defragmentation schedule, see “Scheduling Tasks to Run Automatically,”

To open the graphical Disk Defragmenter console, use any of the following techniques:
● From the All Programs menu, choose Accessories, System Tools, Disk Defragmenter.
● From the My Computer window, right-click any drive icon and choose Properties from the shortcut menu. Then click the Tools tab and click Defragment Now.
● Run Dfrg.msc from a command prompt.
● Right-click the My Computer icon on the Start menu and choose Manage from the shortcut menu. In the Computer Management console, open the Storage option in the console pane and select Disk Defragmenter.

In Disk Defragmenter’s upper pane, select the disk you want to operate on. To find out how seriously fragmented the disk is currently, click Analyze. Disk Defragmenter presents a graphical fragmentation display and makes a recommendation about whether your disk needs to be defragmented. For more details about the condition of your disk, click View Report. Disk Defragmenter responds with statistics about the overall level of fragmentation and lists the most highly fragmented files.

To begin the defragmentation process, click the Defragment button. (You must be logged on as a member of the Administrators group to perform most defragmenting tasks.) While Disk Defragmenter is running, you see a graphical display that indicates the progress of the operation; use the Pause or Stop button at any time to halt the process.

Running Disk Defragmenter Using a Command Line

Disk defragmentation can be a time-consuming process, so you might not want to spend the time on a drive that is only slightly fragmented. On the other hand, any disk defragmenter will do a more thorough job—and finish its work more quickly—on a disk that is only slightly fragmented. (On a highly fragmented disk or a disk that’s nearly full, it’s probable that some large or highly fragmented files will remain fragmented even after the process has finished.) Therefore, you might want to adopt the strategy of running Disk Defragmenter routinely during hours when your computer is otherwise idle. The best way to do this is by creating a batch file that uses a command line to run Disk Defragmenter and then creating a scheduled task to run the batch file.

The command-line version of the Defrag utility uses the exact same program code as the graphical version. To use this command, type defrag d: at any command prompt, where d is the drive letter or mount point of an existing volume. You can use the following switches with the Defrag command:

● /A Analyzes the selected drive or volume and displays a summary of the analysis report.
● /V Displays complete (verbose) reports. When used in combination with /A, this switch displays only the analysis report. When used alone, it displays both the analysis and defragmentation reports.
● /F Forces defragmentation of the volume even if the amount of free space is low. The command-line Disk Defragmenter does not provide any progress indicator except for a blinking cursor. To interrupt the defragmentation process, click in the command window and press Ctrl+C. Using Disk Defragmenter’s Analysis Report, you can determine whether your page file is fragmented. Although page file fragmentation is normally not a serious issue, a severely fragmented page file can reduce your system’s performance. Disk Defragmenter cannot consolidate your page file, because Windows holds it open while you work. However, if you have more than one volume available (even if the second volume is on the same physical hard disk as your system drive), you can work around the problem as follows:

1 Open Control Panel and double-click the System icon.
2 On the Advanced tab of the System Properties dialog box, click the Settings button under Performance.
3 On the Advanced tab of the Performance Options dialog box, click Change under Virtual Memory.
4 From the list of available drives, choose a volume other than the one that holds your current page file. This drive will hold your temporary page file.
5 Choose the Custom Size option, enter settings in the Initial Size and Maximum Size boxes to match your current page file, and click Set.
6 Select the drive that contains the fragmented page file, set the Initial Size and Maximum Size boxes to 0, and then click Set.
7 Reboot to allow your system to stop using the old page file and begin using the new one.
8 Defragment the drive that previously held your page file. This consolidates the free space on that volume so that your new page file will be stored in contiguous space.
9 Repeat steps 1 through 6, this time creating a page file on the original disk and eliminating the temporary page file you created. Then reboot to allow the new, defragmented page file to take over.

Your first line of defense in securing your computer is to protect it from attacks by outsiders. Once your computer is connected to the Internet, it becomes just another node on a huge global network. A firewall provides a barrier between your computer and the network to which it’s connected by preventing the entry of unwanted traffic while allowing transparent passage to authorized connections.

Using a firewall is simple, essential, and often overlooked. You’ll want to be sure that all network connections are protected by a firewall. You might be comforted by the knowledge that your portable computer is protected by a corporate firewall when you’re at work and that you use a firewalled broadband connection at home. But what about the dial-up connection you use when you travel? Viruses like Sasser and its ilk find unprotected dial-up connections to be an easy mark. In fact, although dial-up users are less vulnerable to certain types of attacks just because of their relatively short connection time, they are particularly vulnerable to Internet worms like Sasser because many Internet service providers (ISPs) don’t offer effective firewall protection for this type of connection.

And it makes sense to run a firewall on your computer (sometimes called a personal firewall) even when you’re behind a corporate firewall. Other people on your network might not be as vigilant as you are about defending against viruses, so if someone brings in a Sasser-infected portable computer and connects it to the network, you’re toast—unless your network connection has its own firewall protection.

Windows XP includes a firewall now called, cleverly enough, Windows Firewall. Part of Service Pack 2 for Windows XP, Windows Firewall replaces the Internet Connection Firewall (ICF) that was included in earlier versions of Windows XP. Like ICF, Windows Firewall is a stateful filtering firewall that drops all inbound traffic except traffic sent in response to a request sent by your computer and unsolicited traffic that has been explicitly allowed by creating an exception. You notice nothing if an inbound packet is dropped, but you can (at your option) create a plain-text log of all such events.

But Windows Firewall differs from ICF in much more than name. Among the important improvements that are added with SP2 for Windows XP:

● Windows Firewall protects internal and external connections. As suggested by the name, Internet Connection Firewall was intended to protect your computer’s Internet connection, but it wasn’t easy to properly configure it for connections to your local area network. Recognizing the fact that many security threats can come from your own network, the more appropriately named Windows Firewall now plays nicely with LAN connections.

● Windows Firewall is enabled by default for all connections. By default, Windows Firewall is enabled for all network connections on a computer with SP2 installed. This includes wired LAN connections, wireless connections, dial-up connections, and VPN connections. Any new connections you create have Windows Firewall enabled by default.

● Global configuration options apply to all connections. With ICF, you had to make firewall settings (such as exceptions to allow incoming traffic) separately for each connection. With Windows Firewall, you can make settings globally. Windows Firewall also lets you make settings for individual connections; any per-connection settings override the global settings.

● You’re protected during startup. If Windows Firewall is enabled, Windows provides stateful filtering while it is connecting to your network. During startup, Windows Firewall provides basic protection for network startup tasks such as obtaining an IP address from a DHCP server and Group Policy updates from a domain controller. Full protection according to your Windows Firewall configuration then becomes effective when the Windows Firewall service starts. With ICF, you had no firewall protection until the service started, which left a brief interval in which the computer could be attacked.

● You can specify a scope for each exception. When you set up an exception in ICF (that is, you specify a port through which unsolicited inbound traffic is allowed), the incoming traffic could originate from any IP address. Windows Firewall lets you restrict the scope for exceptions by limiting it to traffic from an IP address that is part of your local subnet or from a list of IP addresses that you specify.

● You can create exceptions for programs. With Windows Firewall, you can create an exception by specifying the name of the program or service for which you want to allow unsolicited incoming traffic. This way, you don’t need to know which port(s) and protocol(s) are used by a program in order to create an exception; Windows Firewall figures it out for you.

● Windows Firewall supports two profiles on domain-based computers. The domain profile is used when the computer is connected to the domain and the standard profile is used when the computer is not connected or connected to a different network. Each profile has a separate list of exceptions and settings. Windows Firewall switches profiles automatically when you connect or disconnect the computer from the domain network.

● Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) is supported. IPv6, sometimes called “the next generation Internet,” is a protocol that will someday supplant the current Internet Protocol, which is more accurately called IPv4. When that day arrives, Windows Firewall is ready. For more information about IPv6, visit http://www.ipv6.org.

● Configuration can be done with command lines or using Group Policy. The user interface for configuring Windows Firewall is convenient for ad hoc management of the firewall on a single computer. But if you perform certain tasks repeatedly, or if you have to configure multiple computers, it’s much easier to set up a batch program or script that contains the commands needed to perform the task. Likewise, Group Policy (particularly in a domain environment) eases the burden of repetitive tasks. We can hide specific drives in Windows XP by using Group Policy Editor. Follow the simple method here and your drive is hidden from My Computer with all your secret Data & Files

Step 1: Click on Start > Run and type in GPEDIT.MSC and click OK

Step 2 : In the left pane click on ADMINISTRATIVE TEMPLATES under USER CONFIGURATION.

Step 3 : In the right pane double click on WINDOWS COMPONENTS

Step 4 : In the right pane again double click on WINDOWS EXPLORER.

Step 5 : Inside WINDOWS EXPLORER you will find a lot of options. Find "Hide these specific drives in My Computer" and double click on it.

Changing Default Location of My Documents

Imaging a situation that all of a sudden your Windows crashed and u had to format and reinstall it. In the process you have lost all the valuable files stored in the My Documents folder. Don't you think it would be nice if we can change the default location of My Documents folder. Yes we can change the default location of "My Documents" from "C" Drive to any other partition of our Hard Disk.

Follow the lines below and your My Documents folder is moved to a different partition of your hard disk along with all your files.

Right click on My Documents.
In the context menu go to PROPERTIES and click.
In the dilogue box click on MOVE and choose the location where you want to keep your files.
Click OK and you are done.

Now even if you have to format your C drive your files will remain safe at a different location.

Add Move to & Copy to in the Right Click Context Menu

HTC launches new HTC Touch Phone. The phone comes in two colors. alluring wasabi green and elegant soft black. The phone responds to the touch of a finger across the screen. It can differentiate between a finger touch and stylus input, and responds accordingly. Touch FLO is the technology called by the HTC found only in HTC phones. A simple move of finger over the display results an animated 3-dimensional interface of three screens, which are contacts, media & application comes up.

HTC phone has both the functions of professional and entertainment facilities. It uses Windows Mobile 6 Professionsl Operating System which allows users to use Internet Explorer, Messenger, Office Mobile, Outlook Mobile etc. The Onboard 2.0 megapixel CMOS color camera takes pictures briliantly.

The phone has only three buttons and the rest of the space is covered by the giant 2.8 inch LCD touchscreen with 240 x 320 resolution and 65K color screen with backlight. The three buttons on the phone are - a call, a hangup and a d-pad for moving around.

The built quality is nice and fits well in the palm of your hand. Its smaller than the iPhone.

The overall impression is good. But it forces you to swap to landscape mode if you intend to use QWERTY keyboard and still endup using your fingernail, for best result use the stylus tucked away at the back.

Ensure Proper Windows Shutdown

Most of the time when we try to shutdown windows, a non responsive programme or something running in the background refuses to close and delays the process. Its really frustrating. We can remove the delay by tweaking the registry for a smooth shutdown.

(Backup your REGISTRY FILE before implementing the following tips. Use the tips at your own risk. I will not be responsible for any mistake that may occur)

Copy the following lines written in between the horizontal lines and paste in notepad by saving the file with filename as "regtweak.reg"
After that double click on the file to import it into the registry file.
Restart your computer and you are done.

Unattended WIndows XP Installation Disk

Installing Windows and all the required softwares is a complete pain in itself !! I hope most of the persons who needs to install Windows frequently will agree with me.

Imagine a Windows installation disk which has all the requisite settings predefined and you don't need to put your name, product key, timezone, regional settings etc and have the latest Service Packs also. After that it will also install silently all your favourite applications along with DirectX, .NET framework etc. Shocked !!

Yes it is possible and i have tried in on WIndows XP that worked fine for me. They say it works on Windows 2003 also. Click here and try is out.
